On March 12, 1888, a record 21 inches of snow fell in New York, resulting in drifts up to 50 feet high. After reading this story, the artist created the painting Snowstorm. However, it aims to show the other side of the snowstorm, not destructive but creative, as this storm is believed to have brought the city into the modern era.
